AMA was selected as part of the briefing and design management team for the development of Waterside, British Airways’ corporate business centre near Heathrow, opened in 1998. AMA helped introduce new ways of working to enhance business effectiveness. Elements incorporated to create a more flexible office environment with enhanced communication included cordless telephones, wireless LAN, “hot desks” for nomadic workers, a full open plan with no private offices, shared meeting rooms, quiet rooms and informal meeting spaces. Since first occupation, BA has invited AMA back to assist user departments as their space needs have developed and changed. The building capacity, originally 2400 staff, has been almost doubled through intelligent and sensitive space management over the last few years. The building has remained a great success in the users’ opinion while being used more intensively and efficiently. British Airways has subsequently employed AMA for advice on their other office spaces, the Compass Centre and the World Cargo Centre, as part of their radical property strategy.
